Camelot Wheel Helper

The Camelot system is just 24 keys arranged on a clock face, but most DJs only ever learn 4 of the 7 rules of motion on it. This tool draws the full wheel, lets you click to set the deck you're playing on, and lights up every compatible neighbour with the kind of move it represents (relative, parallel, energy-up, energy-down). A small quiz mode at the bottom drills the rules until they're reflexive.

    How to use

    1. Click any cell on the wheel (or pick from the dropdown next to the canvas) to set the key you're currently playing.
    2. Watch the cyan, fuchsia, amber and green cells light up — those are the only keys that will mix cleanly from where you are right now.
    3. Click a glowing cell to make it your new "current" key; the suggestions list on the right tells you the kind of move and a mix-in bar number.
    4. Use the quiz at the bottom to drill the rules. The quiz asks for "next keys that keep the energy flat" or "next keys that bump the energy" — read the prompt carefully.
    5. In a real set, plan two or three steps ahead by clicking through the suggestions; if a chain starts producing dim cells you know you've drifted out of the family.

    How to read the result

    The wheel is laid out exactly like a clock: 12 positions on the outer ring are the A (major) keys numbered 1A–12A. The 12 positions on the inner ring are the B (minor) keys 1B–12B. Adjacent numbers on the same ring are a perfect fifth apart in pitch, which is the most consonant key change in Western harmony.

    Four move types are highlighted:

    • Cyan — the same key. Always safe.
    • Fuchsia — relative major/minor. Move one step diagonally (e.g. 8A ↔ 8B). Mood changes, energy roughly the same.
    • Amber — parallel major/minor. Same number, swap A↔B at the same position. Sharper emotional contrast.
    • Green — energy ±1. Move one step along the same ring. Each step up raises perceived energy by about 5 BPM.

    Cells that stay dim are technically possible — you can mix into any key — but they will sound jarring unless you're using a dramatic riser, a breakdown, or a key-change drop. Treat them as "advanced" moves.

    Limitations

    The Camelot system assumes 12-tone equal temperament and standard major/minor tonality. Modal music (Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian), atonal tracks, microtonal work and most non-Western tunings don't fit cleanly on the wheel. If your source material is in E Phrygian, the "compatible" cells will be wrong by design — the wheel is a Western tool.

    Compatible keys aren't the same as compatible songs. Two tracks in 8A can still clash if their chord progressions, melodic centres or rhythmic feels don't agree. Use the wheel for the harmonic skeleton, then listen for bass note and vocal range collisions.

    Energy ±1 is a perceptual estimate. In practice, going from 8A minor to 9A major is a much bigger jump than going from 8A to 9A minor. Trust your ears over the colours.

    The quiz deliberately avoids the trickiest cases (double-relative jumps, modal interchange). It is a teaching tool, not a certification.

    FAQ

    Why are some adjacent cells dim?
    Adjacent cells are a fifth apart (e.g. 8A → 9A is C → G). The wheel does highlight those as "energy ±1" in green because they're harmonically related, but the loudness/feel jump can be larger than the colour suggests. Treat green cells as "smooth-ish" and dim cells as "intentional dramatic moves".
    Is "energy up" the same as "BPM up"?
    No. Energy is a perceptual quality of the harmonic content (bright major chords feel more energetic than minor chords; higher-numbered Camelot keys sit higher on the circle of fifths, so they read as brighter). BPM is a separate axis — you can play a 124 BPM track in 4A and a 124 BPM track in 11A and they'll feel different even though the tempo is identical.
    My library says a track is in 4A but it sounds like 4B — why?
    Key detection algorithms guess from the most prominent chroma in the spectrum. A track with a strong A minor melody on top of a C major chord progression will often get tagged as 7A (C major) because the chord progression wins the vote. Listen to the bass note and the final chord of the drop — that's usually the true tonic. The wheel doesn't know better than the algorithm; trust your ears and re-tag if needed.
    Can I mix directly from 1A to 7B?
    Technically yes (it's a flat-VII), but it's a big leap — almost a semitone below the octave. Most DJs bridge through one of the glowing cells (e.g. 1A → 2A → 3A → 2B → 3B → 4B → 5B → 6B → 7B). The tool shows the direct move as dim on purpose: it's possible but it usually needs a transition trick (filter sweep, reverb wash, drum roll) to land cleanly.
    What's the safest "panic" move from any key?
    Stay in the same Camelot number and swap A↔B (parallel major/minor). That amber move keeps the root pitch class, gives you a strong emotional contrast (sad/happy), and works on the same chord shapes in most cases. It's the move DJs use when they have 30 seconds to find the next record.
