What this solves

Setting eight hot cues in twenty seconds before the set feels productive and usually leaves you with two pads a half-bar apart that you will inevitably mash on the wrong button of. This tool lets you lay out cues on a real timeline first, see the bar/beat gap between any two of them at your track's BPM, and flag the ones that fall too close together to trigger reliably with your fingers.

Use it for acapella entry points, drum breaks you want to loop, the exact frame where the bass drops, and the last hit before the outro so you can punch out cleanly. It's about geometry as much as it is about music.

How to use

  1. Enter the track's BPM and total length. Most DJ software exports both from the file tag.
  2. Set the hot-cue count to match your controller (4, 6 or 8 pads).
  3. The timeline auto-fills that many cues evenly across the track. Click anywhere on the canvas to nudge a cue, or drag a flag left/right to retune.
  4. Toggle Snapping if you want the cues locked to a beat or half-beat grid (recommended for the first pass).
  5. Read each cue's bars from start and the gap to the next cue in the readout below. Anything under 4 beats = red flag.
  6. Hit "Re-spread evenly" any time to start over; the timeline never persists between sessions.

How to read the result

Each flag on the timeline marks one cue slot. Below the canvas, four numbers per cue tell you the same thing three ways: the absolute timestamp (mm:ss.ms), the bar offset from track start, the beat offset within that bar, and the gap to the next cue.

The human-feel line at the bottom converts each gap into seconds at your entered BPM. If two cues are 8 beats apart at 124 BPM, that gap is about 3.87 s on screen — long enough to play an effect sweep between them, short enough to feel like a single move. Anything tighter than that is the red zone.

Limitations

  • Cue placement is computed against a perfect 4/4 grid. Tracks with metric modulation, half-time drops or 3/4 sections will need manual nudging in your software.
  • Reaction-time thresholds are calibrated for a 4-pad controller in a lit booth. Denser 8-pad grids, smaller hands, or dark stages can handle tighter gaps.
  • This page never hears your track — it can't tell you whether a "great cue spot" musically works. It only enforces rhythm geometry; the audio judgement is yours.
  • Drag precision is constrained by the canvas pixel size. Sub-beat moves need to be done inside your software (or via this tool in Free-snap mode).

FAQ

Why is 4 beats the cluster threshold?
It's a finger-reaction number, not a musical one. Two pads hit within 4 beats (≈ 1.9 s at 124 BPM) is the boundary where most DJs accidentally trigger the wrong pad under stage pressure. If your cues are closer than that and they're both important, consider putting one of them on a loop instead and freeing the slot for a once-per-track hit.
Should I snap to beat or half-beat?
Snap to beat (4 per bar) for cue entry points — vocals, fills, drops. Snap to half-beat when you're chasing a transient like a snare flam or a swung hi-hat where exact 1/16 alignment matters. Free mode is for tracks where the grid itself is suspect (live recordings, music with rubato or tempo drift).
Does this work for memory cues (non-coloured) too?
Yes — the geometry is the same. Memory cues on Pioneer gear can sit anywhere within a track; the visual organisation rule (don't cluster, leave a beat-grid gap) still applies. Use the timeline to find a "scribble" timestamp, then save it to memory in your software.
Why doesn't it auto-load my audio file?
Browsers refuse most file-system access for security reasons, and uploading audio to a server would defeat DJ Toolkit's privacy guarantee. For waveform-grade precision, use your DAW or DJ software's built-in cue editor; use this tool for the planning math before you ever import the file.
My track has a tempo change mid-song. Now what?
Set the cue grid against the dominant BPM and accept that the cues may sit slightly off the beat in the section that changes tempo. For drastic half-time/double-time flips, split the track mentally into two grids and re-do the cue plan for each half — this calculator can only honour one BPM at a time.
