BPM Sync Phase Grid

Two decks, one beat-grid. Watch the phase drift accumulate bar-by-bar when BPM is mis-matched, spot beat-ratio sweet spots (2:1, 3:2, 4:3) that make a 4-minute blend stay tight without nudging the pitch fader every 8 bars, and figure out whether your "sync on" is actually saving you — or hiding a transient collision.

What this solves

Sync buttons on modern controllers lock deck B to deck A's beat-grid, but they don't always lock it to the downbeat you'd actually want to drop on. And when you mix two tracks that don't share a clean integer ratio (e.g. 124 against 126), the drift per bar is small enough to ignore for 30 seconds — and fatal by minute four. This grid draws what your ears are about to tell you in 90 seconds: the two beat-markers slowly walk apart, one transient at a time, until the listener hears it and the room clears out.

It's built for two crowds: bedroom producers who want a visual sanity check before committing to a 4-minute transition, and live DJs who play long blends on rotary mixers where the sync button is illegal and the pitch fader is the only friend you have.

How to use

  1. Type deck A's BPM (the track you started playing already).
  2. Type deck B's BPM (the track you want to blend in next).
  3. If deck B is already roughly on the grid, leave phase offset at 0.0 ms. If B's kick hits slightly after A's, type a small positive offset (or use the gear's nudge button) and watch the dots align.
  4. Toggle Sync ON to simulate what the hardware sync does — drift drops to 0 ms/bar and the grid stays clean.
  5. Watch the Drift / 4 min number. Anything under 80 ms total across a 4-minute blend is generally inaudible; above that, the room will feel it.
  6. If the badge below says "sweet spot", you can disable sync and ride the pitch fader — the listener will not hear drift.

How to read the result

The left side of the canvas is bar 1; the right side is bar 8. If the fuchsia dots stay exactly above the cyan dots across all 8 bars, your decks are phase-locked. If the fuchsia dots drift right every bar, deck B is slower than the BPM you typed.

The Drift / bar number tells you how much the dots walk apart every 4 beats. Multiply it by 32 and you get the expected drift over an 8-bar phrase. The Drift / 4 min number multiplies that further and is the real test of whether a long blend will hold or collapse. The sweet spot badge lights up when the BPM ratio rounds to a clean fraction within ±0.5%, in which case a small pitch nudge every 60 seconds will keep the blend tight indefinitely.

Limitations

  • Drift modelling assumes both decks are playing at perfectly stable tempo across the 4-minute window. Real records and CDJs wobble ±0.1% over 60 seconds; this tool does not.
  • The "sweet spot" detector covers common ratios (1:1, 2:1, 3:2, 4:3). It does not cover half-time or double-time differences across genres (e.g. a 174 BPM DnB track plays as 87 BPM house).
  • It cannot tell you which track sounds better at the chosen ratio. A 124 vs 126 mismatch sounds sterile; a 120 vs 121 mismatch sounds seasick. Both are mathematically drift-free but only one is musically defensible.
  • Sync algorithms on real gear (Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor) introduce their own micro-latency. If you have a 5 ms latency on deck B from your interface, that adds to whatever you type here.

FAQ

How much drift is actually audible?
Casual listeners start perceiving a phasing artefact around 15–20 ms of offset. Trained ears notice earlier. The bigger risk is gradual drift — your brain adapts to a constant offset but not to a slow walk. A 4-minute blend that drifts 80 ms total is at the edge of what a club PA and a head-nodding crowd will forgive.
What is a "sweet spot" ratio?
When two BPMs are mathematically related by a small integer (2:1, 3:2, 4:3, 5:4), the listener's ear treats the combined rhythm as a single polyrhythm. The two decks drift but the downbeat collisions line up predictably (e.g. every 8 bars or every 16 bars). You can ride the pitch fader at a slow constant rate and the blend keeps its groove for the entire set.
Why doesn't this tool include an audio waveform?
DJ Toolkit does not store or upload user audio — everything runs locally in the browser. Adding waveform + phase-matching would require reading your local files, which most browsers refuse for security reasons, and which would also make this page a privacy liability. Use your DAW's built-in phase meter or a hardware mixer for that job; use this grid for the planning math.
My controller sync shows green but the blend still sounds phasey — why?
Software sync locks the tempo, not the phase. If the deck B track starts 20 ms after the grid (because the cue point isn't a perfect downbeat), the sync will hold that offset for the entire track. Always nudge deck B so the first kick lands exactly on a bar boundary before engaging sync.
Can I use this for genres outside house & techno?
Yes — the math is BPM-agnostic. For drum & bass (160–180 BPM) or downtempo (70–90 BPM), the drift per bar is the same in milliseconds, but the audible impact changes: faster genres tolerate less absolute drift, slower genres tolerate more.
